Jim Cirillo Dies in Car Accident

For those of you who don't know who Jim Cirillo is, you need to read his book.  He was a real life hero and a heck of a nice guy.  I had the pleasure to meet him at the SHOT show about 6 months before he died.  He was friendly, funny, and bigger than life.  He will be missed.

Some Thoughts on the Dangers of Mold (or Mould if you prefer)

University of Minnesota, Environmental and Occupational Health Dept. Project PubH5103/5104

Harmful Effects of Indoor Molds

"There is much yet to be learned about the health effects of chronic inhalational exposure to indoor molds . Only a handful of decades have passed since improvements in building construction began making indoor spaces more airtight. Prior to this, excess production of mold spores and/or mycotoxins was likely diluted by regular exchange between indoor and outdoor air. Unlike other toxigenic substances, inhaled mycotoxins in residential settings have only been studied for the past 30-40 years and without specific markers of either exposure or disease. The inability to definitely link the presence of the agent in the environment to human exposure data and subsequently to molecular alterations and disease leave many unconvinced of the deleterious effects of mold/mycotoxin exposure."

Fungal Contamination in Public Buildings: Health Effects and Investigation Methods

2. Health Effects of Indoor Molds
2.4.2 Limitations
2.4.2.1 Exposure assessment
"In most epidemiological studies on indoor mold and health, the exposure assessment was based on participants' self-reports. In the few studies where exposure to mold was assessed by a member of the research team, the exposure classification was based on dichotomous questions such as the presence or absence of dampness and/or mold; there was no quantitative exposure assessment, and therefore no determination of a dose–response relationship."

There's a Fungus Among Us: Mold Attacks Real Estate

"In recent months, developers, building owners, home builders and others in the real estate industry have faced an avalanche of legal claims growing out of a substance that is found almost everywhere on earth, is 100 percent organic and has been alive longer than the human race — mold.

Even Hollywood has had its share of mold claimants: Both Ed McMahon and the real-life Erin Brockovich (the paralegal whose story forms the basis for the movie) have been plaintiffs in mold cases, claiming their houses have been affected by toxic mold. McMahon even claimed that mold lead to the death of his dog, Muffin.

But what might sound like a bad joke has turned into a serious liability for the real estate and insurance industries as plaintiffs have won million-dollar judgments based on the presence of mold in single-family homes and commercial buildings.

An array of mold claims have been filed against commercial-building owners, home builders and even public authorities that own municipal buildings and courthouses.

Almost overnight, mold has joined radon, lead-based paint, asbestos and underground storage-tank leaks as sources of environmental concern for real estate professionals.

But even more than those other substances, mold has captured the public imagination — or at least the imagination of TV producers and magazine editors.

Stories about mold have appeared on many of the major TV news shows, in Time and Newsweek, and on the cover of the New York Times Magazine.

The media coverage about mold may be turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy: An article in a recent issue of Business Week speculated that fear of mold claims could affect the ability of Citicorp to sell its Travelers Insurance subsidiary."

What Caliber for Self Defense?   AKA   9mm Vs. .45   AKA   "Oh please LORD not this argument again!"

We get a lot of questions from customers about what caliber is best for self defense.  Well, I am NOT going to review calibers here.  What I am going to say is this:  Reliability of the gun and your ability to hit what you are shooting at are more important than caliber.  A miss with a .44 is less effective than a hit with a .38.  Consider these factors FIRST.  Get a quality firearm that fits your hand and you can handle.  THEN worry about caliber.

When you get right down to it, there is no free lunch.  The advantages of more hitting power must be weighed against the increased recoil you get with heavier calibers.  The faster follow up shots you get with lighter calibers must be weighed against the loss of "smack" you get on the other end.  A smaller gun may be easier to carry, but it will be harder to shoot well.  Find the balance that suits your needs.  If you need help, don't hesitate to ask.  The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.

And capacity of the pistol will also not be a major factor to most civilians (military and law enforcement are another matter).  The odds are you will finish the fight with whatever is in the gun, however much that is.  Carry a reload just in case, because it is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Remember, in order of importance:

  • Reliability
  • Ability to hit your target
  • Caliber

BUT I will say this, carry a sufficient caliber.  For most people that means at the VERY LEAST a .380 ACP or .38 Special.  9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP would be better.  .22s and .25s should only be carried if the shooter, even after training, simply can not hit with anything bigger.

Hollywood Myth #1.0

Myth:  Snapping the cylinder shut on a revolver will not hurt the weapon.

Fact:  End shake, bent cranes, and worn locking can all be caused by flicking the cylinder shut on a revolver.  Don't do it.  It is no faster, and considerably less positive and reliable than simply closing the cylinder.

Battle of the Century

Col. Jeff Cooper   Vs.   Massad Ayoob

If you don't know who these two men are, or are unaware of their often entertaining rivalry, it's worth your while to read up on them.  They are two of the most quoted and respected authorities in the shooting world.  Who's right?  You decide for yourself.  Or pick a little from both, we won't tell.
